Junior Drivers
Good afternoon, Saranac Families,
I know there has been some interest in expanding driving privileges to our junior class, and I completely understand why families are asking about this. As a parent myself, I certainly understand that having the ability to drive to and from school can make a big difference for students and families, and I appreciate your patience as we work through this process.
I wanted to provide a little background on our current situation so families have a better understanding of what we are considering.
Our high school parking lot currently has approximately 170 spaces available for faculty, staff, and student drivers. This also includes middle school faculty and staff who utilize the lot and a designated section specific to guest parking. This year, we have 127 seniors, many of whom already have driving privileges or are expected to obtain them during the school year. While we recognize that not every senior will drive to school each day, we want to make sure we are able to provide our seniors with the opportunity to have driving privileges before expanding them to additional grade levels.
At this time, we are not making any changes to junior driving privileges. If we are able to extend driving privileges to juniors, it will not happen until after the first few weeks of school. We will communicate an official decision with families as soon as we have had an opportunity to evaluate the parking situation and determine what is feasible and safe for everyone.
In the meantime, I kindly ask that families allow us some time to work through the logistics rather than contacting the main office individually about junior parking. We will make sure families receive an update as soon as a decision has been made.
